Time for me to get an inspection and update my tags.

So, of course my MIL turns on now. Why the fuck would it not?

P0420 - catalyitc system below threshold

P0456 - emissions system leak detected (small)

P0457 - fuel cap loose/missing

Replaced the fuel cap less than a month ago, so I’m sure that will go away w/ the 456 code.

That 420 tho...

I see you spelled the 420 code in a 420 manner for greater verisimilitude.

Read MIL and parsed it as Mother in Law. That made this make no sense.

I don’t want to turn on my MIL - in either case.

I work on many levels.

But then I repair elevators, so...

*makes joke about your work having its ups and downs*. Also keeping in the tenguy vein, elevators are like boats that take you across a river that goes up and down. Stairs are bridges.

p0420 is not good. Catalytic converters are not cheap :’(

Do you have a scanner that can read the catalytic converter temps while running?

Not currently, no. I had a kickass android phone and the Torque app.

“Had” being the operative term there.

Do you know of a decent (also: free) Windows- or Linux-compatible code reader?

Also, I just have a cheap ELM bluetooth dongle, so I’m not even sure if it can see the temp parameters anyway.

No sir.

I’m hoping it’s an O2 sensor, but those aren’t cheap either. And never east to take off.

Been dealing with a P0420 code myself recently. I’m going to try changing the O2 sensor first. The cat is only about 18 months old, so I’d be surprised if it’s already going bad.

just make sure they are nice and cool. I usually spray a little PB blaster on them and let it sit in for a while

remove MIL light bulb

Profit :D

Dont forget to put bulb back in before car breaks down.

Same to you. I fortunately already bought an extra O2 sensor during my engine swap. I have another (aftermarket) cat that I’m going to put on at some point, but I need to get an S-pipe made for my new header first.

Negative, Ghost Rider. Gauge cluster illumination is all surface-mount LEDs, and it’s a CANBUS system anyway.

My latest car searches inversely reflect my level of frustration with cars lately - either all-electric drivetrains, or pre-ODB.

Found out it’s the cat going bad. It’s starting to rattle inside. I’ll need to make some adjustments to my exhaust to get the other one to fit.

Possibly. Right now I’m chalking it up to “you get what you pay for”. It’s an auto parts store brand cat, bought when I needed a new one right then and there and only had about $100 to play with. It was about a week before my engine swap was supposed to be done (had friends coming from out of state to help) and the old one was in rougher shape than expected. I’ll try to find out what their warranty is on it, but if nothing else this will just motivate me to get my third car roadworthy again, which is just replacing a few oil seals I’ve had for a few months now.
